Causes of the Civil War video

The North and the South went to war due to many different causes.  The Northern states were more industrial, whereas the Southern states were more agricultural.  Slavery in the south was horrible.  They worked in the fields, growing and harvesting cotton.  Slaves did not have a choice on whether they wanted to work or not, they were not given good living conditions and were beaten senseless.  Slaves revolted, or fled to the North.  The most prominent revolt was led by Nat Turner.  The masters became increasingly angry because their slaves were fighting back against them.

Laws were passed to keep slaves from learning how to read and write so they could not communicate with each other.  The slaves then organized the underground railroad, which was not underground nor a railroad.  It was called this because it was extremely secretive.  The slaves used it to escape the horrible conditions in the south to go to the North, as far as Canada.

The south began to believe that they could not exist without slavery, whereas the North did not want slavery at all.  This led to more difficulties and arguments between the two regions of the country.  Southern states began to be known as "slave states" and the others were "free states".  A law was passed to let slave owners go to the North and take their slaves back.  This led to many arguments and problems because the slaves were in the free states, and were not allowed a trial. Dred Scott tried to take on a trial against a slave owner.  He lost the case because he was not titled as an American citizen.

A 34 hour battle took place at Fort Sumpter.  Shortly after this war is declared between the Northern and Southern states.
